09/01/21 COMPETITION: checkmate in 1.5 moves!

Note that the bottom left corner of the board is ‘a1’. This set is less challenging than the last set of puzzles, but if you are struggling, revisit our previous puzzles and solution pages for tips on where to begin (you can find these in the blog). We prefer to receive answers in algebraic notation.

In this puzzle, the fifth in this intermediate set, it is black to move and white to checkmate next turn. Simply find all the moves for black this turn, and find the white checkmate as response. Try and complete these puzzles by visualising them in your head, and if it is too challenging, play the moves out on a chess board.

When you think you know the answer, send your solution in to us by submitting the form on this page. We will publish the full solutions, and names of all those who sent us the correct answers, in our blog next week (if you would rather not be named, please say so!).

Everyone who sends in their answers receives at least 1 point. If you correctly guess a single solution, you will receive 3 points and you will receive a further point for each and any correct solution. The puzzler with the highest score after the six week set of puzzles will win a solver badge/solver spots and a free chess lesson with the teacher of their choice!

Good luck!
